Every first sunday in may, the so-called walberla festival, a patronal festival in honor of st. Walburga, takes place on the plateau of the ehrenburg near kirchehrenbach, colloquially known as the walberla. It is considered one of the oldest spring festival in germany.
It is said to have its roots in an ancient pagan sacrificial feast in honor of wodan. The associated pilgrimages have been in progress since the 9th century. Century testifies. In 1799, the geographical statistical-topographical lexicon of franken mentioned 6000 to 8000 visitors and 200 cobblers offering their wares there.
The festival quickly gained popularity and so for the year 1923 are more than 70.000 festival visitors testify.
On this weekend it is once again. The festival starts today, friday, at 5 pm with the setting up of the maypole by the "heimatfreunde" and the "kerwasburschen". Music is provided by the music club. Immediately afterwards the beer tapping takes place by the burgermeisterin anja gebhardt. Then the "ehrabocher staudla" dances.
The actual festival will be on saturday, 5. May, 10 to 23 and sunday, 6. May, 9.30 to 23 o’clock. On sunday starts at 9.30 o’clock a service in the walpurgis chapel. In old accounts, it can be read that still at the beginning of the 19. At the beginning of the twentieth century almost all the neighboring catholic communities went to the chapel with processions. In 1804, it is described that "true devotion has given way to a coarse amusement". The municipality points out that from the parking lot opposite the inn "zum walberla the passage is blocked. There are shuttle cabs from the train station, village square, gas station or county parking lot to the former upper parking lot, from there it goes only on foot.
