Price decline: burkardroth cuts less wood
The only item on the agenda of the public meeting of the market town council dealt with the development and planning of the community forest. 2019, which is almost over, was not an easy year for the forest, mayor waldemar bug (odp) reminded the councillors. Similar to 2018, it was a much too dry year. Significant problems due to kaferholz and storms caused a supersaturated timber market and lower prices. The price of spruce wood has dropped from 90 euros per solid cubic meter to 25 euros.
Forest ranger stefan blumrich from the rhon-saale forestry association and managing director fabian menzel could only agree with the mayor’s assessment. Therefore, with 2300 solid cubic meters, significantly less wood was cut than the forestry equipment with a cutting rate of 3400 solid cubic meters made possible. Also for the coming year the plan with 3000 solid cubic meters is clearly below the cutting rate. On the one hand, the weather in the spring and an increased effort in the care sector had led to a lower logging rate. On the other hand, the poor prices were decisive for the restrained felling behavior, explained blumrich. It makes no sense to continue cutting coniferous wood if it is not needed and cannot be sold at a profit.
The mayor supported this approach. "As long as coniferous wood cannot be marketed at reasonable conditions, we will only take out what is necessary. We should not replace the missing cut with hardwood either." The market community is committed to sustainable use of the forest, and overuse is to be avoided at all costs, even if this means that the operating result is lower. But the forest has always been in the positive range in the past years. Forest management should not be considered from year to year, but over a longer period of time, the mayor emphasized.
These are the places where timber was felled
In concrete terms, timber was harvested this year in the following areas: in the rainschlag section near stralsbach, 570 solid cubic meters were harvested in old-growth thinning. The existing oak stand was thinned to give the oaks more room to grow. In the area of todtenholzlein near lauter 150 solid meters of beech wood were harvested. The harvesting of hardwoods in the summer was possible without any problems and without damaging the soil, the forest manager emphasized.
360 solid cubic meters were harvested in the klingenholz and barnschlag areas using harvesters. The wood had already been sold, but was still lying in the forest. Currently, work was carried out in the area of rothekreuz. 550 solid cubic meters had been awarded to a contractor by engine, but due to the weather, the removal of the m had to be stopped. The ground was softened and not load-bearing, and there was also damage to the high rhoner, which will be repaired before christmas.
As far as damaged wood caused by bark oat infestation is concerned, the market town of burkardroth has so far come off rather lightly: blumrich spoke of around 500 solid cubic meters. Not all the kafer wood has been processed yet, around 150 solid meters are still lying in the forest, but will be removed in the next few weeks. In response to a question from the committee, the forest ranger explained that the bark beetle was not currently a danger, and that it would only become an issue again in the spring.
Young trees are planted
The maintenance measures were carried out on eleven hectares of flat land, and the maintenance target of 5.6 hectares was far exceeded. Fences have been dismantled on 1800 meters, new fences have been erected in a length of 600 meters. Overall, blumrich was able to certify to the market town council that their forest was well cared for. About 7000 young plants have been planted this year, among others beech wildlings. In the area of the school nature trail hermannruh exotics like sugar maple, chestnut fir and douglas fir have been planted.
Further plantings are planned for this year. Eight hectares of silver fir, douglas fir and deciduous deciduous wood are to be planted. But the christmas tree culture also needed new growth. Northern spruce and blue spruce grow here. The planting is carried out according to the specifications of the forestry department, assured the district manager. The municipality received grants for regeneration, maintenance and planting, and the preservation of biotope trees. About 40.000 euro could be retrieved, which was quite respectable for a relatively small district.
Biotope trees in the contractual nature reserve were valuable habitats and had to remain standing for twelve years. The company has invested in a new winch, which is in regular use. There was a discussion about care and safety during felling work. Both forestry experts confirmed that the work is carried out strictly according to the specifications and accident prevention regulations.
